چکیده

Neurosurgeons have long used various image-guided systems, such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and threedimensional (3-D) stereotaxy in an attempt to more accurately localize intracranial targets (34). The development of advanced neuroimaging techniques over the years has provided the neurosurgeon with increasingly more accurate and precise tools to aid in the microsurgical treatment of intracranial lesions, such as intrinsic brain neoplasms. Studies have shown that, without the aid of image guidance, as many as 80% of operations performed to remove brain tumors leave part of the lesion behind (16). Although difficult to prove definitively, many recent papers have reported that the degree of resection of gliomas apparently correlates with both progression-free and overall survival (4, 7, 8, 17, 18, 20, 25, 26, 28, 48, 50). Consequently, real-time intraoperative information regarding the anatomic characteristics of the surgical field remains an important consideration to the neurosurgeon.

Neuronavigation for Intracranial Meningiomas

According to its location, the surgical treatment of intracranial meningioma can be of considerable challenge for the neurosurgeon. Image-guided surgery essencially provides intraoperative localization for dynamic navigation and, also, improves the surgical planning. The continuous development of neuroimaging and computated technology promotes continuous improvement of navigation techniques and...

Intraoperative high-field magnetic resonance imaging, multimodal neuronavigation, and intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring-guided surgery for treating supratentorial cavernomas

OBJECTIVE To determine the beneficial effects of intraoperative high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multimodal neuronavigation, and intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring-guided surgery for treating supratentorial cavernomas. METHODS Twelve patients with 13 supratentorial cavernomas were prospectively enrolled and operated while using a 1.5 T intraoperative MRI, multimodal ne...

Neuronavigation by intraoperative three-dimensional ultrasound: initial experience during brain tumor resection.

OBJECTIVE Three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound is an intraoperative imaging modality used in neuronavigation as an alternative to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This article summarizes 4 years of clinical experience in the use of intraoperative 3-D ultrasound integrated into neuronavigation for guidance in brain tumor resection. METHODS Patients were selected for inclusion in the study on th...

Usefulness of Image Guidance in the Surgical Treatment of Petrous Apex Cholesterol Granuloma

The petrous apex is a pyramid-shaped structure, located medial to the inner ear and the intrapetrous segment of the internal carotid artery. Lesions of the petrous apex can be surgically treated through different surgical routes. Because of the important neurovascular structures located inside the temporal bone, anatomical 3D knowledge is paramount. For this reason, image-guided surgery could r...
